Ok, lately I've been finding I have the attention span of a gnat. I never really used to be this way. I can think back to the times where I could watch a movie marathon or read a long book or play the same video game over and over without getting bored.
Now I just can't sit and do something for enough time to make it enjoyable. I always feel I need to be hopping from one thing to the next. Perhaps it's because I have too many choices of things I want to do and not enough time to do them in. Over the years my movie, game, book, music, TV collection has grown. I'm always torn between watching/doing something I have already done or something new.
However I've noticed it's not just me. Is society in general becoming too multi-tasked and attention deficient? Is technology doing this to us? We crave instant communication with email, cell phones, and IM. We have satellite TV with 100's of channels. Most kids now can't sit still for more than a few minutes. I feel sorry for teachers. When is too much, too much?
Also I'm sure my job also has something to do with it. I'm in a position where I get constant interruptions, even my interruptions have interruptions. I'm also constantly multi-tasking. I've gotten so used to that I don't exactly find working on one large project appealing anymore. I just can't seem to get into a groove because I'm always looking for the next interruption to deal with. At least I can still sit though 1-2 hour meetings as long as the subject is something I'm involved in.
I'm trying to search for a solution to this, but I'm not really sure what to do. I could force myself to only do one thing or schedule things out for my personal time but I don't think this will help in the long run. I may consider closing my email program at work and only look at it periodicly or when I'm idle. But then I just cringe next time someone sends me some super high priority thing that needed to be done yesterday and I don't see it/read it for hours after it was sent.
Well I'm off to something else now... |
but do you doodle? I find myself doodling in meetings more often now...
as for interruptions at work...I've noticed that about a third of my interruptions mean I have to bug you for something...you need someone to bug :)
I feel sorry for the admin team, I bug them the most. Of course if they had a bit more of an organized system I wouldn't have to do so as often.
I find when I'mat a dog show or work that I'm like that but once I get home I go into full lazy mode and sit to work on the computer (email, lj) and watch TV or read.
